E-drug: Treatment of amoebiasis (cont)
--------------------------------------

Dear E-druggers,

According to a number of references, the recommended treatment for acute
intestinal amoebic infections is metronidazole or tinidazole, followed
by a course of a luminal amoebicide such as diloxanide furoate to
eliminate cysts in the intestine and prevent reinfection.

Diloxanide (Furamide) is not readily available in Australia or New
Zealand, and is not available at all in Fiji.
Is metronidazole/tinidazole sufficient?
Can anyone suggest an alternative to diloxanide?
How is this problem approached elsewhere?

Thanks very much, Michelle
