"AIDS Cases Doubling Every 14 Months in India: Report"
Xinhua News Agency (05/21/97)
The Press Trust of India reports that the number of AIDS
cases in India is doubling every 14 months. From 1987 through
1990, the average number of AIDS cases reported each year at
Tamil Nadu's National AIDS Reference Center was 5.7. That
average jumped to 28 during 1991-1993, and to 104 in 1994.
Extrapolating the data for the entire Indian population suggests
that there would have been more than 25,000 cases of AIDS in
India by the end of 1994. The World Health Organization had
estimated 20,000 AIDS cases in the country.
