NCIH Conference Addresses Global AIDS Epidemic

Washington, DC - A full day of activities devoted to the global AIDS
epidemic is planned Friday the 13th of June, 1997, during the 24th annual
conference of the National Council for International Health, at the Hyatt
Regency, Crystal City, VA.

The highlight of the day is a special plenary session on "Business in a
World of AIDS", presented by Dr. Peter Piot, Executive Director of UNAIDS,
US Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala, and Richard Woo,
Director of Community Affairs for Levi Strauss & Co. The plenary will
address the growing need for the international business community to become
more involved in the fight against the AIDS pandemic, particularly in
developing countries, where resources have decreased dramatically in recent
years.

Other AIDS-related presentations taking place during the day include the
panel "US AIDS organizations reaching out internationally" - a discussion of
the potential relationships US AIDS Service Organization could foster with
counterpart organizations in the developing world. And, NGO representatives
from Pakistan, Cote d'Ivoire, and Israel will give presentations on the
HIV/AIDS issues in their countries.

A display of several panels of the NAMES Project International AIDS Memorial
Quilt will be on display. A reception in the evening of Friday June 13,
1997, will culminate the day's activities. The reception will provide an
opportunity for networking, socializing, and welcoming our special guests.
