Find out more about this non-profit organization's mission to promote preventive strategies that emphasize management of heart disease in India.

Dear Friends,

Cardiovascular diseases account for 33% of deaths globally, 66% of which
arise in the developing world. This silent epidemic is expected to
accelerate further in the developing world due to rising life
expectancies, economic transitions, lifestyle changes and tobacco use
(from the World Health Organization).

AmiCORIndia (http://www.amicorindia.org) is a non profit autonomous
organization that aims to create access to health information resources
and facilitate electronic communications for health professionals, in
order to raise the awareness of the challenges posed by the emerging
cardiovascular disease epidemic in India.

AmiCORIndia is an offspring of ProCOR which is an international, ongoing
e-mail and web based electronic conference aimed at addressing the
menace of cardiovascular disease in the developing world. ProCOR is a
collaborative effort of SATELLIFE and Lown Cardiovascular Center with
Prof. Bernard Lown being the guiding force.

AmiCORIndia would be guided by a distingushed group of International and
Indian advisory committee consisting of leaders from various fields.
Moderators for this electronic conference are distinguished leaders in
their field. They will ensure the highest scientific quality of
discussion. The participation of like minded individuals and
organizations from all fields and all levels is critical for the success
of this endeavour.

Treatment models for heart disease in the developed world offer little
hope for the developing world. Costly, invasive procedures, a strong
emphasis on technology, reliance on highly-trained super-specialists,
and a bias towards curative, rather than preventive medicine, make the
treatment of heart disease on the "Developed World" model an
impossibility for the "Developing Nations".

Accordingly, AmiCOR seeks to promote preventive strategies that
emphasize management of heart disease through behavior modification (to
reduce risk factors for heart disease) and drug therapy. Interesting
features in the website include sections for medical students and post
graduates. To stimulate them to write high quality articles, we have
proposed to give them incentives in the form of vouchers to purchase
books.

We invite and welcome all those interested to participate and enrich
this vital network. Your active participation will ensure the success of
this important mission.

Yours sincerely,
D.Prabhakaran
