Tobacco in Indonesia and Nepal
Arlene Silva, summarized from www.unfoundation.org 2001-07-02 According to the UN Foundation News Wire, Indonesia has approximately 141 million smokers. In an effort to address the tobacco epidemic in Indonesia, the World Health Organization and Indonesias Health and Education ministries recently launched an anti-smoking web site. This public health intervention will be a forum for young people to discuss smoking and learn about its effects on health. The site was created in response to the observation that smoking begins mostly among school students, either at junior high or senior high school," according to the research and development chief of the education ministry.
Meanwhile, a study conducted by the World Health Organization and the government of Nepal has shown an increase in smoking there, despite governmental interventions. Specifically, Nepalese smokers consumed 600 cigarettes per capita in 2000, compared with 580 in 1990-2 and 170 in 1970-2 (according to the UN Foundation News Wire).
