Information on the Pharmaceuticals Clearinghouse for the Americas

As part of the Shared Agenda in Health Initiative, between the
World Bank, PAHO, and the IDB, PAHO is leading a project to
create a Pharmaceuticals Clearinghouse for the Americas. The latter
will serve as a web-based intelligence center on pharmaceutical
policy and data for the Americas.

The objectives of the Pharmaceuticals Clearinghouse are: to gather,
organise, and disseminate information on best practices in the
region, help people share experiences and advice across countries,
and generally make information on pharmaceuticals in the region
widely available to research institutions, governmental agencies,
and policy makers. It will be updated on a periodic basis so that
information is relevant.

The Pharmaceuticals Clearinghouse is expected to be launched in
mid to latter 2001.

PAHO is working in partnership with the World Bank and the IDB,
and other institutions including ISALUD (Argentina), FIOCRUZ
(Brazil), SOIKOS (Spain), the Fundacio Institut Catala de
Farmacologia, a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and
Training in Pharmacoepidemiology that co-ordinates a drug
utilization research group in Latin America and the Caribbean
(DURG-LA), USAID, Management Sciences for Health (MSH), and
the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP). Representatives from these
institutions have already participated in two working group
meetings convened in Washington DC in 2000 and 2001.

The Architecture of the Pharmaceutical Clearinghouse for the
Americas will consist of Six Strategic Information Blocks:

Block One: Industry and the Market
 Block Two: Drug Management
Block Three: Public Health Regulations and Quality
 Block Four: Economic Regulations
 Block Five: Drug Prices
 Block Six: Drug Utilisation
