"Nyanza Area Tops on HIV-Positive Mothers in Kenya"

     Between 20 percent and 30 percent of expectant mothers in Kisumu,
capital of Kenya's Nyanza Province, are HIV-positive, reports Nyanza
Provincial Medical Officer of Health Richard Muga. A total of 16,000 cases
of HIV/AIDS were reported last year, according to Provincial Commissioner
Joseph Kaguthi. This accounts for 20 percent of the total cases in the
country and
fills 45 percent of the nation's hospital beds.  Kenya's Ministry of
Education is increasing counseling and HIV/AIDS awareness in an attempt to
help control the spread of HIV.
