GLOBAL HEALTH CONFERENCE, JUNE 12 - 14, 1997
============================================

NCIH Conference Addresses Worsening Global Health Conditions

Washington, DC - AIDS and TB continue their relentless march. Maternal
deaths increase worldwide. For every Ebola case trumpeted on CNN, tens of
thousands of measles victims slide into unreported graves. Mosquitoes
capable of transmitting malaria and dengue expand their range yearly and
have entered the U.S. "Superbugs" develop resistance to existing drugs
faster than we can bring new ones on line. And tobacco is on track to
becoming the world's leading killer of adults.

These daunting challenges are all the more frightening when we consider the
political mood in the U.S. Despite these clear signals, many in public
service either ignore or are unaware of the harsh realities of deteriorating
global health conditions.

To address these issues, the National Council for International Health
(NCIH) is focusing its 24th Annual Conference June 12-14, Building Strategic
Alliances, on ways to enhance health through better advocacy and through
strategic multi-sectoral alliances. Conference participants will learn of
policies and practices involved in creating public-private sector
collaborative ventures - and seek to ways of educating the public sector
about health, and ways of stirring the health sector into action.

Invited speakers include Gro Brundtland, the former prime minister of Norway
and candidate for the head of WHO; fellow WHO candidate Sir George Alleyne,
the director of the Pan American Health Organization; and Carol Bellamy,
head of UNICEF, Sen. Bill Frist, MD (R-TN), Rep. John Porter (R-IL), Rep.
Tony Hall, (D-OH), Dr. Mohammad Akhter, director of the American Public
Health Association (APHA), J. Brian Atwood, administrator of the U.S. Agency
for International Development (USAID), Dr. Barry Bloom of Albert Einstein
Medical College, Dr. Harold Varmus director of the National Institutes for
Health, Carmen Barosso of the MacArthur Foundation, Amb. Sally Shelton of
USAID, Dr. Carl Taylor of Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Jo Ivey Boufford
of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, and representatives from the
World Bank, Eli Lily Co., Merck, Pfizer, Land O'Lakes, and other
corporations, government and non-governmental agencies, and consulting
organizations.

In addition to the plenary, panel, roundtable, and poster session, NCIH is
introducing a new event - "Crossfire." The new Crossfire series is
introduced by Conference Chair Nils Daulaire, M.D., MPH, the senior health
policy advisor at USAID, which supports the conference. Dr. Taylor of JHU
will participate in this series. The aim is to enhance public awareness of
how foreign assistance programs benefit public health, the economy, the
environment, and basic human development.

The NCIH conference will feature more than 76 papers in panel, roundtable,
and poster presentations that outline programs, policies, and practices to
meet global health challenges in the coming century.

The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City hotel in
Arlington, near Washington National Airport.

NCIH is a non-profit organization, created through the concerted action of
several health advocacy organizations including the American Medical
Association, the American Public Health Association, and the American Nurses
Association. NCIH strives to expand public awareness of international health
issues by actively advocating U.S. responsibility, by developing and
stimulating national and international public health networks, and by
sponsoring meetings on key issues.
