Board of Directors

Chairman and Founder

Bernard Lown, M.D.
Dr. Bernard Lown is Professor of Cardiology Emeritus at the Harvard School of Public Health and Senior Physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He is in active cardiology practice at the Lown Cardiovascular Center in Brookline, Massachusetts. In 1985 he was co-recipient with Dr. Eugene Chazov of the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the International Physicians for the Prevention of nuclear War (IPPNW), an organization that they co-founded. Dr. Lown is also the recipient of the UNESCO Peace Education Prize, the first Cardinal Medeiros Peace Award, as well as numerous honorary degrees and international awards. In 1999, he was recognized by the Guardian newspaper in London as one of the most influential people of the 20th century.

Board Members

Harold Amos, Ph.D.
Dr. Amos is Professor of Microbiology Emeritus at Harvard Medical School. During his longtime association with the school, he has held other positions, including the Associate Dean for Basic Sciences and Chairman of the Division of Medical Sciences. In 1995, Dr. Amos was awarded the Public Welfare Medal of the National Academy of Sciences. Harvard University bestowed upon him the honorary Degree of Doctor of Science in 1996.

Nassib Chamoun
Nassib Chamoun is President/Chief Executive Officer, and member of the Board of Directors of Aspect Medical Systems, Inc. Mr. Chamoun founded the company in 1987, and he is the inventor of its core technology patents. Aspect Medical Systems develops, manufactures, and markets the Bispectral Index (BISTM) monitoring technology, which enables anesthesia providers to assess a patient's level of consciousness and administer the appropriate amount of anesthetics during surgery. Mr. Chamoun was a teaching and visiting fellow in cardiovascular physiology at Harvard University from 1984 to 1987. He was named Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year 2000 in the Health category.

Mark Lediard, M.P.H.
Mr Lediard is Chairman and CEO of Digital Arts and Sciences/Puerto Rico. Mr Lediard was formerly Senior Vice President and Director of Health, Nutrition and Population Programs for the Academy for Educational Development (AED) in Washington DC, managing international programs in over 35 developing countries. While at AED, he developed an educational program to support the economic and democratic reform process in Russia.

Sandy Pentland, Ph.D.
Dr. Pentland is Academic Head of the M.I.T. Media Laboratory; Co-Founder and Director of the Center for Future Health, board member of the Learn Foundation in Bangladesh. Newsweek Magazine named him one of the 100 Americans most likely to shape the next century. His overall focus is on using digital technology for the worldwide reinvention of health, education and community.

Michael J. Poulos
Mr. Poulos is retired Chairman & CEO of Western National Corporation and former President of American General Corporation. Mr. Poulos currently serves as a Director of American General Corporation and a Trustee of Century Shares Trust, Boston. He is also a trustee/director of Colgate University, Sam Houston Area Council Boy Scouts of America, the Houston Symphony and the Houston Grand Opera.

Douglas Schair, M.B.A.
Mr. Schair is the former Vice Chairman of the Board and Chief Investment Officer for the life insurance company Life Re Corporation. A graduate of Colby College and Harvard University, Mr. Schair serves as a trustee of Colby.

Edward A. Schwartz, J.D.
Mr. Schwartz is the former Chief Legal Counsel for Digital Equipment Corporation. First serving on SATELLIFE's Advisory Committee, Mr. Schwartz is former Acting Director for the organization. He holds a Law Degree from Boston College School of Law and holds honors from Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Law.


Job Opportunity at SATELLIFE: Senior Director of Development

SATELLIFE, an international non-profit organization based in Watertown, MA and a leading health information provider to the developing world is seeking a Senior Director of Development.

The Senior Director for Development has both hands-on fund raising responsibility and limited managerial duties. S/he is expected to raise increasing amounts of private funds from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other organizations, with a goal of securing six- and seven-figure gifts. Ability to grasp SATELLIFE's mission and field work is essential. Knowledge of international funding sources is a welcome plus. The Director for Development reports directly to the Executive Director.

The qualified applicant will have the minimum of a Bachelor's degree. Fundraising experience - including a proven record of success raising money from corporations, foundations and other organizations - is preferred; however, creative, energetic candidates with exceptional capabilities and a desire for relevant experience will also be considered. Applicants should possess excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively in both written and oral form, and a strong commitment to international humanitarian work. Some travel is required.
