Subject: Cochrane column in journal - CAM reviews
The Cochrane CAM Field column in the journal Explore is designed to promote an awareness of the Cochrane Collaboration and to improve the understanding of Cochrane reviews among complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) researchers and practitioners. Each Explore column typically begins with the reproduction of the abstract of a relevant CAM-related Cochrane review, followed by a commentary on the review.
The current Explore column, by Karen Sherman, is a commentary on the Cochrane review of massage for neck pain, and is available (with subscription) in the May 2008 issue of Explore, at http://www.explorejournal.com/current. The subsequent column, currently in press for the July issue of Explore, is a commentary by Gloria Yeh on the Cochrane review of Tai Chi for rheumatoid arthritis. Although the CAM Field Explore column has been published periodically since May 2005, we have arranged to publish this column more frequently in the future (i.e. columns are planned for every issue of the bi-monthly Explore for the remainder of 2008 and into early 2009).

Subject: Reporting findings of clinical trials
When researchers embark on a clinical trial, they make a commitment to conduct the trial and to report the findings in accordance with basic ethical principles. This includes preserving the accuracy of the results and making both positive and negative results publicly available. However, a significant proportion of healthcare research remains unpublished and, even when it is published, some researchers do not make all of their results available. Selective reporting, regardless of the reason for it, leads to an incomplete and potentially biased view of the trial and its results. For more information please refer to "Reporting the Findings of Clinical Trials" in The Bulletin.
The WHO Registry Platform Working Group on the Reporting of Findings of Clinical Trials has proposed that "the findings of all clinical trials must be made publicly available". On 20th May an online survey will commence, the aim of which will be to obtain feedback on this proposed position.
To participate in the survey please go to http://www.who.int/ictrp/results/consultation/en/index.html and follow the link.
You are invited and encouraged to participate in the survey and may do so as an individual, or on behalf of an organization. Please be aware that the survey will close at 5.00pm Geneva time on Friday 27th June. We look forward to receiving your contribution.

E. Sender: Steve Goodman [sgoodman@jhmi.edu]
Subject: SCT/ImpaCT Trial of the Year Award
See formal announcement below. Thanks to Iain Chalmers and David Sackett for nominating this trial. What is not in this announcement is the fact that the PI says that she got the idea for this trial while 'killing time browsing the Cochrane Library', and being 'horrified' that this widely used treatment, which she had good reasons to believe might be harmful, had never been tested for its long term effects. From the moment she was browsing the Cochrane Library to when the 4-country, >30 site trial of nearly 2000 infants was actually initiated was only 18 months.
Clinical Trial of the Year Award Winner Announced
Inaugural Award to Honor Study of Caffeine and Premature Infants
The Society for Clinical Trials (SCT) and Project ImpACT (Important Achievements of Clinical Trials) announce the winner of the inaugural SCT/ImpACT Clinical Trial of the Year award. The award went to a trial examining the long-term effects of the administration of caffeine in premature infants to alleviate apnea of prematurity, showing a substantial health benefit. Barbara Schmidt, MD, MSc, the trial's principal investigator and the Kristine Sandberg Knisely Chair in Neonatology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, accepted the award on behalf of the Caffeine for Apnea of Prematurity Trial Group. Her trial was the first to receive this award, which was announced on May 20 at the Society for Clinical Trial's annual meeting in St. Louis, on International Clinical Trials Day.
