[Note from moderator (Carolyn Rochat): Is there a particular reason you have chosen to use Bactrim? I did a quick MEDLINE search and it appears that there is significant resistance to the trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination. There were a number of cases where quinolones were used for this gram-negative infection e.g. ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin. An article in Clinical Pharmacist in 2001 recommends a dose of 12?15 mg/kg/day (http://www.ascp.com/public/pubs/tcp/2000/jan/cr_manage.shtml)An Emedicine article recommends the ffg. oral dose 160 mg TMP 800 mg SMX PO q12h for 10-14 d (http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic3457.htm).]
Dear all,
May I know if there is any recommended dosing of intravenous batrim
specifically for stenotrophomonas infections (be it bacteremia or
pneumonia). I have checked Micromedex, Lexi comp, and couldn't find a
specific answer except under general term of " other infection" which stated the dosing as trimethoprim component 15-20 mg/kg/day in divided doses, which is similar as that for PCP treatment. I wonder if such dose of intravenous bactrim is suitable for the infection caused by stenotrophomas M among ICU patients?
May I know if there any reference that I can find such dosing info?
Your information is much appreciated.
Thank you
Chee Lan
