Indices - Turinal (5)

To add to the information given by Kirsten on the 14th Oct 2003 There
is a meta-analysis of randomized control trials of progestational
agents in pregnancy in the British Journal of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology March 1989 Vol 96 pp265-274. This study concluded that the
meta-analysis failed to provide convincing evidence of the efficacy of
progestational agents for the maintenance of pregnancy. Since there is
evidence of hormonal imbalance in some women with recurrent miscarriage
any trials of progestogens should include only women with
demonstrated hormonal abnormalities who are carrying a live foetus as
shown by ultrasonography. I have found no studies which show any
substantial efficacy for progestogens (even in women with hormonal
imbalance). Reprotox however does review the possible second
generation toxicity and the evidence appears to indicate that there is
little increase in risk.
It is interesting to note that the use of allylestrenol in Japan
appears to be limited to the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy
rather than to treat threatened abortion.
Hope this information adds to your knowledge
