Manufacturers of allylestrenol:

Gestanin® Organon, GB
Gestanon® Organon, AT, BE, CH, ES, IT, LU, PL, TR
Gestormone® Zorka, PL, YU
Maintane Tab.® Jagsonpal, IN
Orageston® Akzo, BR
Premaston® Kalbe, ID
Profar® Infar, IN
Turinal® Gedeon Richter, HU, PL
Turinal® Medimpex, CZ
Turinal® Mekim, HK

I think the Martindale profile states its role clear enough:
Allylestrenol is a progestogen (see Progesterone, Ref.) structurally related
to progesterone that has been given in threatened and recurrent miscarriage,
and to prevent premature labour. However, with the exception of proven
progesterone deficiency, such use is no longer recommended. In threatened
miscarriage in progesterone-deficient women a suggested dose is 5 mg three
times daily by mouth for 5 to 7 days.
A case-control study of allylestrenol use in pregnancy during 1980 to 1984
in Hungary indicated that it was not teratogenic. (1)
1. Czeizel A, Huiskes N. A case-control study to evaluate the risk of
congenital anomalies as a result of allylestrenol therapy during pregnancy.
Clin Ther 1988; 10: 725-39.

Unfortunately, companies, be it multinationals such as Organon or nationals
such as Gideon Richter in Hungary, continue to manufacture unsafe and
obsolete drugs in any country where the regulatory authority has not banned
them. Manufacturers feel no responsibility in such issues. This again
stresses the importance of a strong regulatory authority and of activist
groups such as consumer movements to lobby governments.

Indices: Obsolete drugs in the Philippines: allylestrenol (Turinal),

Greetings!

I am Dr. Rosete of the Philippines and I would like to revive an issue
posted here four years ago regarding allylestrenol (Turinal), a drug
that used to be prescribed for threatened and habitual abortion. I just
learned that this drug continues to be marketed here in the Philippines
despite being withdrawn in the US and Western Europe.

I feel dismayed by the fact that developing countries like the
Philippines are the recipients of obsolete drugs. A review of
literature of allylestrenol does not show a randomized control trial
proving its efficacy although there are some publications published in
other European languages where an abstract was not available.

I would like to ask to this e-group whether there is basis for using
Turinal for threatened or habitual abortion. Another query would be why
would a drug that had been withdrawn in its country of origin be dumped
into a developing country.

Any enlightenment on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

With thanks,
Dennis Rosete, M.D.

I tried Martindale to see who made "Turinal" but no luck. Can you tell us
who markets it? Ed
