Indices: Research in Rational Drug Use
Dear INDICES members,
I am a research scholar and working on a research
project "Essential Drugs and Rational Use - A Study Among
Inpatients in a Tertiary Care Hospital, Hyderabad, India". I use the
anatomical therapeutic chemical classification system, with
defined daily doses per thousand patient days (ddds/1000pds). This
method is recommended by WHO and INRUD for drug utilization
studies and compares utilization patterns in primary, secondary
and tertiary care hospitals. Part of the research work is
published in INRUD News, April 2003 ("Analysis of drug utilization
among patients in Osmania general hospital, Hyderabad, India"), and in
the WHO Essential Drugs Monitor 32 2003 under the title
"Indian hospital drug use study shows need to improve prescribing"
http://www.who.int/medicines/mon/32_13.pdf .
I would be please with information from tertiary care hospitals in
other countries for the last 2 years (2001 & 2002), to compare it
with that of Osmania General Hospital. I look for the following data:
1) Total utilization of drugs(DDDs/1000PDs)
2) H02A - Corticosteroids-individual & group total
3) A02 - Drugs for acid related disorders-individual drugs & group
total
4) Top 10 drugs
I hope to see this work duplicated in hospitals and programmes in
other countries.
With kind regards,
Dr G.B. Simpson
