Indices: Vitamin K and upper GI bleeding (2)

Dear AMC,
There is no rationale of such admin of Vit K. This vitamin is useful for
bleeding disorders with intact liver function. It is required for the
carboxylation of Glu residues (on clotting factors II, VII IX and X) to
carboxy-glutamate, the active entity in clot formation. For this purpose
(carboxylation), bicarbonate, oxygen, a reducing environment and liver
microsomal enzyme activity is required. This implies that in the presence
of liver disease this biochemical activity is impaired.
This does not rule out the possibility of its function when there is even
minimum liver activity.

Thank you
