INDICES> RFI - textbooks for a Drug Information Center? (2)
------------------------------
Dear Josephine,
Any recommendations would depend on what level of drug information you had
in mind, and the services that are envisaged. The following list of books
was considered an example of minimum bibliographic provision to support a
basic service by participants at an international seminar on drug
information centres in Berlin 1995.
Martindale, the Extra Pharmacopoeia; a medical dictionary; USP Drug
Information for Patients and Health Care Professionals; the country's
national formulary or British National Formulary; A pharmacology textbook,
eg Goodman and Gilman; Merck Index; American Drug Association Drug
Evaluations. For toxicological information services: Poisoning (Dreisback)
could be included.
This list is now 7 years old; since then (for example) the new WHO
Formulary has appeared. I hope the list will stimulate others to up-date
and improve it to meet your needs.
For any drug information centre or service, close behind the need for
reference books would be the need to address training support and quality
assurance of the service itself.
I am forwarding contact details from another list that may be beneficial to
Indices subscribers: hif-net@who.int.
Here is a little information about hif-net:
'HIF-net at WHO': working together to improve access to reliable
information for healthcare workers and health professionals in developing
and transitional countries. Send list messages to <hif-net@who.int>. To
join the list, send an email to <health@inasp.info> with name,
organization, country, and brief description of professional interests.
Why not also post your message on hif-net Josephine?
best wishes,
Philippa Saunders.
