INDICES>Pethidine/meperidine safety & analgesic efficacy vs morphine
------------------------------------------
[reposted due to layout problems in earlier version - apologies WB]
[This is one of the many questions before the next WHO EDL Committee early
2003. It would be nice if the Drug Info Centers in developing countries
could discuss these matters in INDICES. See also Richard Laing's message of
4 August. WB]
Dear Indicers,
I am a pharmacist currently working on a drug formulary for an
international humanitarian organisation that works mainly in Africa, and I
am having
difficulty clarifying the above issue raised by the international medical
community on board. I know pethidine is still listed on the new WHO Model
Essential Drug List, I have done a current copernic search on Pubmed and
reviewed
current editions of Micromedex and BNF, but so far have not been able to
find
many conclusive and updated reviews. I would welcome any references or
feedback from the INDICES community on the history of this debate and the
evidences available so far, especially regarding the inclusion and role of
pethidine (meperidine) in a hospital formulary. Thanks and God bless,
kae :)
