Dear Sylvester,

According to information on MICROMEDEX CD and a search on Medline reveals
that aspartame can be successfully used in non-insulin dependent diabetics
with no
alteration of diabetic control attributable to aspartame. Some literature
reports and references are give below to substantiate the safe use of
aspartame
in diabetics.

LITERATURE REPORTS:

The effects of aspartame were evaluated over a 90-day period in 43 men and
women age 21 to 70 with non-insulin-dependent diabetes. These patients
ingested
1.8 g of aspartame each day, which is considerably higher than the
estimated
average ingestion of aspartame (0.5 g). There was no evidence of
deterioration
of diabetic control or increases in plasma phenylalanine levels above 4
milligrams/deciliter (Stern et al, 1976).
