INDICES> policosanol (4)
-------------------------------

Dear friends,

As was to be expected the level of evidence was poor. The most recent
clinical publication (Berthold and Berthold, Am Heart J 2002;143:356-65),
which was presented at a promotional symposium, clearly states: "Data on
efficacy determined by clinical end points such as rates of cardiac events
or
cardiac mortality are lacking". In addition there is a registration hurdle
to take
because apparently the stuff is "a mixture of... .....alcohols isolated
from
sugar cane wax" - and it is uncertain whether it can ever be marketed in
such
a constant composition that the FDA is satisfied. It MAY become a good
drug, but let's wait. Safety data for a limited number of patients are now
available up to 3 years.

The text obtained from Ms Amador is clearly promotional and does not
belong on INDICES.

Regards,

Dr.L.Offerhaus
