Dear Mary,

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Chid Health's book "Medicines for
Children" (1999) states that:

USES:
Treatment of infections due to Gram -ve or Gram +ve bacteria.

DOSAGE:
Oral (birth-1 month; 1 month-2 years; 2-12 years; 12-18 years): 7,5
mg/kg 2
times daily
IV (birth-1 month; 1 month-2 years; 2-12 years; 12-18 years): 5 mg/kg 2
times daily

DOSAGE ADJUSTMENT IN RENAL OR LIVER FAILURE:
In severe impairment (creatinine <20ml/minute/1,73m2) total daily
dosage
may be reduced by half, although monitoring serum levels provides the most
reliable basis for dose adjustement. No adjustement in impaired hepatic
function.

ADMINISTRATION:
IV: IV infusion to be administered over 30-60 minutes. The infusion
should
not be strored in the refrigerator

CONTRA-INDICATIONS & WARNINGS:
In children and growing adolescent ciprofloxacin is only recommended
where
the benefit outweigh the risk of arthropathy. Contra-indicated in patients
with
a known hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones. Use with
cautions in epilepsy or CNS disorders - seizure thresìshold may be reduced
by
ciprofloxacin. Patients receiving ciprofloxacin shouls be well hydrated and
excessive alkalinity of the urine avoided to prevent cristalluria. Patients
with a familial history of glucose-6-deydrogenase activity may be prone to
haemolysis.

LICENSED STATUS (in UK):
Not licensed for use in children under 1 year old.
