INDICES> Ciprofloxacin use in children (2)
--------------------------------------------------
Dear Mary,
The BNF recommends that if benefit outweighs risk, by mouth, 10-30 mg/kg
daily
in 2 divided doses or by intravenous infusion, 8-16 mg/kg daily in 2
divided
doses. It has been been given in children for cystic fibrosis and otitis
externa in age groups as low as 2 years as well as in neonates (van den
Oever
HLA, Versteegh FGA, Thewessen EAPM et al: Ciprofloxacin in preterm
neonates:
case report and reveiw of the literature. Eur J Pediatr 1998; 157:843-845).
I think depending upon the severity of the infection, where no other option
is
working and benefit outweighs risk, ciprofloxacin can be used. However,
patient
monotoring should be done for any adverse event.
Regards.
