INDICES> Plasma Expanders in Shock? (2)
-------------------------------------------------------

In Canadian emergency departments where I have worked normal saline is
the usual fluid for patients in shock. I don't believe that our
emergency department even stocks plasma expanders. Here is a reference
to a systematic review that found no difference in mortality or length
of stay in hospital between colloids and crystalloids:

Choi PT-L, Yip G, Quinonez LG, Cook DJ. Crystalloids vs. colloids in
fluid resuscitation: a systematic review. Crit Care Med 1999;27:200-10.
