UCT
The Medicines Information Centre situated at Groote Schuur Hospital,
Observatory, Cape Town, is looking for a dynamic pharmacist to join its
dedicated team. This is a contract post of the University of Cape Town and
all conditions of service of contract staff of the University will apply.
Hours of employment: Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm, one hour lunch; 37.5
hours per week
Remuneration: R78 000 - R 117 000 per annum depending on skills and
experience. (UCT payclass 9-10)
Contract: T1 - one year (further details available on application)
Annual leave: 15 days per annum
Sick leave: 12 days per annum

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR: DRUG INFORMATION PHARMACIST

DEPARTMENT: MEDICINES
INFORMATION CENTRE (MIC)
DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY, UCT
MAIN FUNCTION: DRUG INFORMATION
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF MIC
MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: ASSIST WITH QUERIES OF ALL
TELEPHONIC SERVICES
SCIENTIFIC WRITING
ASSISTANT ORGANISER, CME
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR EXPERIENCE NEEDED:
Pharmacy Degree/Diploma. More than 1 year's working experience in drug
information, retail or hospital pharmacy essential. Good communication
skills and an interest in pharmacology, an advantage.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES:
1. IN-SERVICE TRAINING
Applicant will be trained in:
· searching medical resources
· answering queries form the medical profession and recording answers
· writing medical articles
· critical appraisal of the scientific literature
· presenting case reports and journal articles
Training is for 3 months, depending on experience and application of
knowledge.
2. TELEPHONE SERVICE
Answer calls to the Centre from general lines, drug-free sport hotline,
subscription service line and other future services.
3. SCIENTIFIC WRITING
Write/compile articles for continuing medical education points as part of
MIC subscription service and other MIC publications.
4. ASSISTANT ORGANISER, CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION
Assist with administrative activities of MIC pharmacology weekends and
other continuing education activities
5. ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITY REPORTING
Weekly MIC management meeting
Daily MIC peer review meeting and departmental consultant review meeting
Ward rounds at Groote Schuur Hospital and/or associated academic hospitals
Monthly activity reports
Selected journal club and research and development programme presentations
6. REMUNERATION
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. (Total hours, exc. lunch:
37.5hrs/week)
