INDICES> Iodised salt(2)
------------------------

Iodised salt? It depends on the iodine content of the drinking water,
which tends to be very low in mountain areas. In the past iodine-
deficiency goitre was very frequent in the European Alps (and in
Tibet!), but since salt was iodized it is rare to see any fully
developed goitre. When WHO entered Albania in 1991 there was a
high frequency and salt was not iodized. This has now changed. So
my answer would be: Useful in Northern India where drinking water
comes from the mountains, less useful in the plains.
