INDICES> fluoroacetamide (6)
----------------------------
Dear All,
Our info from the Poisindex on fluoroacetamide is as follows:
Fluoroacetamide or fluoroacetate is a highly toxic rodenticide that is
rapidly absorbed and may cause systemic toxicity after oral, dermal,
inhalation or ocular exposure. Its metabolite, fluorocitric acid, blocks
cellular metabolism by inhibiting the Krebs cycle. Fluoroacetate is
present in certain toxic plants:
Acacia georginae
Dichapetalum cymosum
Dichapetalum toxicarum
Gastrolobium grandiflorum
Oxylobium parviflorum
Palicourea margravii
Clinical effects may develop within 30 minutes of exposure but may be
delayed as long as 20 hours.
Effects of acute exposure commonly include nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea; serious poisoning may result in seizures, coma, respiratory
depression, hypotension and cardiac dysrhythmias including ventricular
tachycardia and fibrillation and asystole.
Metabolic acidosis, renal insufficiency, elevated transaminases,
hypocalcemia, and hyperglycemia have also been reported.
Shock, metabolic acidosis renal insufficiency are associated with an
increased risk of fatal outcome after fluoroacetate ingestion.
The estimated lethal dose in man is 5 milligrams/kilogram; however, one
milligram of the pure compound is probably enough to cause severe
toxicity.
When sodium fluoroacetate is heated to decomposition it emits highly
toxic fumes of sodium oxide and fluorine.
Full description of the compound can be obtained through the Poisindex
-Toxicologic Management under the entry of fluoroacetamide or can be

[Thanks! That was what we were looking for. It is unfortunate that such information is
'hidden' in a commercial database (Poisdex), but good that you 'published' it! WB]
