Celecoxib was evaluated in the Jan. 29/99 issue of the
Medical Letter. The article reports on three comparative
double blind studies:
1) For OA celecoxib 100 or 200 mg bid was as effective as
naproxen 500 mg bid.
2) For RA celecoxib 200 or 400 mg bid was as effective
as naproxen 500 mg bid
3) For post surgical dental pain a single dose of
celecoxib 100 or 200 mg was less effective than naproxen
500 mg or ibuprofen 400 mg.
None of these trials have been published.
For safety:
Serial endoscopy studies showed that over a 12-week period
GI ulcers occurred in 7% of patients treated with celecoxib
200 mg bid compared to 10% with diclofenac 75 mg bid, 35%
with naproxen 500 mg bid, 23% with ibuprofen 800 mg tid.
In a 24-week endoscopy study, the incidence of ulcers was
4% with celecoxib 200 mg bid and 15% with sustained-release
diclofenac 75 mg bid. Neither of these trials have been
published.
