Celecoxib/Celebrex is not superior to other NSAIDs in terms of its actions.
It is being marketed as being safer, i.e., fewer gastrointestinal problems.
So far though this increased safety has not been directly demonstrated.
The company has used surrogate markers rather than direct clinical data.
Patients treated with Celecoxib have fewer endoscopically proven GI ulcers
than those treated with other NSAIDs but whether this means fewer
significant GI bleeds is as yet unknown. What is known is that Celecoxib is
much more expensive than older NSAIDs.
