Dear Colleagues
The South African Medicines Control Council (MCC) is currently
reviewing the registrability of creatine-containing products in South
Africa. In South Africa they are commonly used by athletes and
body-builders. Medicinal claims such as weight gain in AIDS patients
and the elderly have been made. In some countries it is classified as
a food while in other countries it is registrable as a medicine at
high doses (i.e. doses >3g/day) or when it is used for clinical
conditions such as AIDS.
We would like to know whether there are any clinical trials currently
underway or recently completed which examine the benefits and risks of
creatine-containing products both in the long and short term. In
addition, is there any post-marketing data on the safety of such
products at doses used (doses recommended by manufactureres have
ranged from 2g/day up to 30g/day).
Kindly submit all your responses directly to me and I will compile
them for Indices once I have received all of them.
Thanks in advance
Ushma Mehta
