AFRICAN DISSERTATION WORKSHOP - May, 1999
Open for African Graduate Students Worldwide

The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, with support from the
Rockefeller Foundation, will be conducting an African Dissertation
Development Workshop on the theme of Health and Population Issues in
Africa in May, 1999. This workshop will be conducted in a distance
education format over the Internet. This Workshop is designed for
African doctoral students in the social sciences, health sciences,
or demography, who have completed at least one year of graduate
study and are in the process of developing a dissertation research
proposal. Participants will gain skills in designing a doctoral
dissertation research proposal while at the same time having the
opportunity to interact with distinguished faculty and a variety of
African doctoral students concerned with health and development topics
in Africa.

This Workshop is being conducted jointly by faculty from the departments
of Population and Family Health Sciences, and International Health at the
Johns Hopkins School of Public Health for the fourth successive year.
The distance education format of the workshop is designed so that
African graduate students anywhere in the world with access to the
Internet and WWW will be able to actively participate.

Applicants should reply by e-mail to: mailto:rtkambic@jhsph.edu with a
letter explaining their reasons for wanting to participate in the
Workshop. Also required (by e-mail, or fax or regular mail -see below)
is a brief 1-2 page description of the proposed research, a brief
resume, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor.

Because of funding from the Rockefeller Foundation there is no charge for
participation. Enrollment will be limited to 30 students. Please note
the distance education approach of this workshop and the basic computer
and internet connectivity requirements as described below.

This is a "virtual" Workshop, which will be conducted entirely over
the WWW. All lecture-presentations will be available anytime/anywhere
on the Internet, accessible through your WWW browser. Lectures will use
RealAudio streaming audio with synchronized slides.
Faculty-student and student-student interactions will be primarily
asynchronous through threaded discussions on an electronic Bulletin
Board. Synchronous interaction will be through LiveTalk internet
chat sessions for participants worldwide. The computer requirements
are Windows or Macintosh with a WWW Browser (Netscape 3.x or
Microsoft Explorer) and Internet connectivity with at least
a 14.4kb modem or LAN. (Note, all software requirements are
free downloads including: web browsers, and RealPlayer.
Tutorials for accessing and using the software are provided.)
