To whom it may concern

We have had the following ADR reported following the use of anti TB
therapy.

A Female child of eleven years with a history of tuberculosis was given
anti TB drug therapy which included rifampicin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide
and isoniazid for 3 months. While on therapy she developed thrombocytopenia
and oral and vaginal bleeding. Rifampicin was stopped and the platelet
count picked up initially around day 6. But after another 7 days the
platelet count started to fall again and the child developed haemoptysis,
although she was not on rifampicin.

We have done a search of the literature at our disposal. In the documented
cases of thrombocytopenia there is no record of relapse after therapy has
been stopped. According to what we have read complete recovery is usually
seen within 7 - 14 days of stopping the drug. Can you advice us on this
problem. Is this a case of drug induced thrombocytopenia or could this be
a case of idiopathic thrombocytopenia.

Please send us a quick reply if it is not too much of a bother. I am also
attaching the tentative reply given to the consultant. Please feel free to
give me a positive feedback on it.( - I had to delete this aspect
of the message - not readable - moderator)

Thanks
