INDICES> Vit A beyond the shelf life

Supplying one of our project-partners in Angola with essential drugs
last year, we were informed that the Vit A capsules (200,000 IU) we
sent had an expiry date of Jan 1999. Beside a reclamation to our vendor
our partner would like to know, if it is possible to use the Vit A
capsules for some more time (at least till the next delivery arrives).
(Of course the rule is clear - not to use drugs beyond the shelf live -
but is an exeption justifiable?)
Our pharmacological knowledge is far too limited to answer this, so
maybe someone of the indices readers could help us with some
experiences: What happens with the Vit A? how fast does it break down?
will it get toxic?
thanks a lot
