We are reviweing our essential drug list and a suggestion has been
made for the deletion of tolbutamide. We note that tolbutamide has
also been deleted from the WHO Model List. Glibenclamide is on the WHO
model list in two strengths, 2.5mg and 5mg. We propose to do the same,
introducing the 2.5mg strength particularly for the elderly.
Some comments have been received that the 2.5mg strength also may not
be very suitable for the elderly. I would like to know of experiences
with the use of glibenclamide 2.5mg in the lederly and whether this
is the best drug for the elderly or there are safer agents.
