Request for information on the average drug usage of Indian population :Revised (4)
************************************************************************

Dear Sukumar,

It is not easy to answer your queries.

I will suggest that first you should read about the concept of Essential Medicines. In India, we have one National EML and many states have their own EML.

For your second question - You want to know the consumption of various medicines in India. You will have to find out from National Survey or consult the planning department (under Health) of various states to find out the consumption of different medicines in public facilities. To calculate the DDDs/1000 population of a particular medicines, find out the DDD of the medicines and find out the population of the area for which you have the values and then find out the DDD/1000 population. To get the data on consumption of different medicines you really have to search for that. You will have to find out the consumption of medicines in private sector as well which is again not so easy.In India, a major chunk of medicine consumption (around 80%) is from private sector. Else search for some studies who have done drug utilization studies in different states in both public and private sector.

Best of luck!
