Having made Emergency Contraceptive availability so open, India will soon
record the highest sales of this drug in a short span. Many more players
will soon be in the market, with aggressive marketing strategies and
campaigns. It is therefore important for the Govt. to carry out long term
research, on various aspects : What happens in multiple users of such pills
- in terms of ADRs, fertility, effect on different body organs, etc.
We need to assess also to what extent the pills are being misused, the
psychological impact of marketing on teens, etc. We have to be careful, and
if the problem needs to be nipped at the bud, we should not hesitate in doing that.
