Nimesulide put under focused pharmacovigilance programme in India (3)
************************************************************************

Dear members,

I agree with Dr. Sampada's comments, we should get facts right first and then make a case. As far as our information goes no application has ben made so far for introduction of Nimesulide in USA. It has been wrongly quoted as banned by FDA. Nimesulide has been selectively marketed in some countries only.

Dear Members,
Is Nimesulide really banned in USA? I am not sure. In fact, HIGH COURT OF DELHI delivered a judge on Nimesulide use in India, in March 2004, saying the same thing that Regulatory authorities of USA or UK never received the application for marketing the drug, so there is no question of the drug being prohibited or not approved in these countries (check at http://delhidistrictcourts.nic.in/mar/8335.htm)

Drugs marketed in one country may not be marketed in other countries. Use of Nimesulide was suspended only in 3 countries, though it is in use in about 50 countries. Israel has again permitted its use, after evaluating its overall safety data. No country has in the strict sense of the term (data missed) the drug.
Can we have the latest authentic data on Nimesulide use in India? Otherwise it creates confusion in the mind of prescriber, dispenser and patient too.

Maybe our National Pharmacovigilance Advisory Committee can help us getting the facts on this issue.

Sincerely
