Price control for 'Branded Generic' medicines (3)
******************************************************

Dear members,

These days many big pharma companies like ,Ranbaxy, Cadila etc are
manufacturing two versions of certain medicines. One is their popular
brand that they push through doctors and second has less name
recognition and is priced little low. The second version is the
branded generic and is pushed by the superstockist and retailer. I am
sure the quality of both the version is the same as it is manufactured
by the same company.

To start with we can give this information to the consumers through
media, lectures, discussion etc.

Some of our members can give us the name of the company manufacturing
two versions of one medicines with their trade names available in the
market.

Best wishes,

Dear Members,

I appreciate the work proposed by anita kotwani , it is an need of the
hour, i personally feel that the only way is to Empower consumers
about various generic medicines in the market and their price, where
they can demand the substitute from the pharmacist, we should have to
change the mindset of the consumer that generic drugs are not
substandard , there should be lot of awarness programme should be
conducted by different organisation, institutions and pharmacist
should be authorised for the substituting the suitable drugs.

Price control for 'Branded Generic' medicines (2)
******************************************
Dear members,
As mentioned in the first message that there is a huge margin for
retailers for the not-so-popular brand/branded-generic version
of medicines, so we need to discuss whether there should be some
directive from the pricing authority of India for price control of
these medicines or market information is necessary.
One way is that NPPA can fix that branded-generic(not-so-popular or
traditionally generic) medicines should be say 30% (to be fixed by
consensus) priced less than "branded" (popular) medicines. Second
option is providing market information to the consumer. Empowering
consumers about various generic medicines in the market and their
price, they can demand the substitute from the pharmacist. This
requires education of consumer and we should also educate doctors
about the range of price for the medicines they

prescribe. Cost of medicine is one very important component of
access to medicines
I need to know the views of the members on this topic.
Thanks.
Best wishes,
