Background:

The advent of ARV's has led to a revolution in the management of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in both the developed and developing countries. The supply chain management philosophy is becoming increasingly important in the success of HIV/AIDS treatment programs. In developing countries in particular, treatment programs have been slow in rolling out due to among other things, insufficient skills to effectively manage the HIV/AIDS programs at national level.

IDA Solutions seeks to enhance access to essential medicines by improving pharmaceutical management skills and increasing local capacity in low- and middle-income countries. IDA Solutions (IS) works with public and private sector partners at national and international levels.

In Pretoria, South Africa; ARV Access for Africa (AA4A), a subsidiary of IDA Solutions, The Netherlands; provide courses in "Supply Chain Management of HIV/AIDS Medicines and Supplies".

Course Objectives:
To provide training in the areas of; planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the procurement and supply management of ARV delivery projects.

Specifics of the course are to:

* Expose participants to issues specific to planning the procurement
& distribution of ARVs.

* Provide program managers with skill in program planning and
management, and to teach how to apply those skills in their own country.

* Provide practical tools to decision-makers in essential drugs programs to improve their level of performance

* Exchange views and experiences amongst senior decision-makers

In Summary
The course is highly interactive, with presentations by international experts, facilitated group exercises, discussions and field visits. Participants are taken on a guided tour of Ndlovu Clinic, located in a rural area, where care is provided to the community. The clinic is a role model for ARV roll-out n resource-poor settings in South Africa, and the rest of the world.

There is a visit to a major Distribution Centre that concentrates on Sub Sahara Africa for Pharmaceutical deliveries as a practical example on procurement, distribution and supply management.


Target Participants
The course is aimed at ARV program managers, physicians, pharmacists, health systems managers, procurement and distribution managers.

Expected Outcome: After completing the two-week course, participants will be well equipped with practical skills to address challenges common in the supply chain management of ARV's in HIV/AIDS programs.

Fees and costs:
The course fee will be â3 200 (three thousand two hundred euros).

The fee includes:
* Transfer to/from Johannesburg International Airport
* Hotel accommodation (single occupancy)
* Three meals a day including the weekend meals at the hotel.
* Tuition fee and materials
(Participants are expected to secure their own funding for transport (international flights) to and from Johannesburg International Airport)
