Drug Formulary in India (9)
************************
Dear Jean,
In addition to information provided by India-Drug members, I would like add a little more information. India has National List of Essential Medicines developed in 1996. However, we do not have National Essential Medicines Formulary. There are more than 15 Indian states that have developed their own EML and are using it for procuring the medicines for public health system. There are a few states that have developed Essential Medicines Formulary as well. To name a few, Delhi was the first one to produce it in 1997, and it has been revised as well. Other states include Himachal Pradesh, Karnatka, Tamil Nadu, Chhatisgarh, perhaps Orissa also.
You may refer to WHO Essential Medicines Formulary 2006 which is an excellent document. If you need more information, please write to Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs (DSPRUD).
Best wishes,
Prof. Usha Gupta
