Drug Formulary in India (3)
***************************
Dear Jean,
Yes many states have their own Essential Drugs List, Formulary and Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs). Delhi State took the initiative of developing State Drug Policy way back in 1994 and EDL, Formulary and STGs were developed with technical assistance from Delhi Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs (DSPRUD). DSPRUD had been implementing agency for INDIA-WHO Essential Drugs Programme in India for last 10 years.
First Essential Drugs Formulary was published by DSPRUD in 1997 and revised in 2005. STGs describing treatment for 318 commonly encountered diseases in 11 specialties was the pioneering activity of DSPRUD and this book is in its 3rd edition now, first edition was published in 2002. These guidelines have been accepted nationally as revealed by its demand among doctors as well as acceptance by the State Government. Special editions have been published for four state governments namely Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand by DSPRUD.
