World Health Day 2007
--------------------
"Invest in health, build a safer future for all"
World Health Day - 7th April every year- is celebrated to create "awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization (WHO)".
This year's goal is to focus on international health security issues, to engage high-level political interest in addressing these issues, and to show the close link of health to national and international security agenda.
The theme of World Health Day 2007-- international health security -- reminds us that "Threats to health know no borders". Threats to health security such as pandemics, natural disasters, chemical and nuclear accidents, climate change and its consequences, and bioterrorism all have the potential to affect international public health security. The epidemic of HIV/AIDS is another global phenomenon that adversely impacts not only health, but also the economy and stability of many countries. Although the burden can be greater for the developing world, epidemic-prone diseases are a growing threat to all nations. Such threats present new challenges and require an urgent and collaborative response.
According to the WHO, in a globalized world, health issues increasingly present new challenges that go far beyond a national border and that have impact on the collective security of all people. Increased collaboration among all people and nations will better enable the international community to work for better health and in turn assist in making the world more secure.
Recognizing the complexity of the health and security challenges, the WHO is making the world more secure by working in close collaboration with all concerned stakeholders to address these shared challenges. While collaboration on many levels is essential, every country must invest in health and build capacity to prevent new and existing threats by strengthening its own public health system.
Life and health are our most precious possessions. We have the knowledge and unprecedented resources to build a healthier and safer world. Let us ensure that each country -- rich and poor -- has a robust health system capable of serving all those in need.
