Dear all,
In relation to the discussion on "Medicine prices of few generics to
decrease", I would like to add the following :
Once the patent protection is over on the original branded drug, other
manufacturers can produce the same molecule either under the generic
(international non-proprietary) name or under brand names of their
own. So all such drugs manufactured either by generic or with a name
are termed as 'generic equivalents'. In real term branded medicine is
the medicine manufactured by the company who has innovated and manufactured the medicine for the first time and has patent for it, this is called as Innovator Brand, e.g.,for diclofenac sodium, Voveran is the innovator brand and diclofenac manufactured by all other companies are generics.
In India we have mainly generic market as we did not have the typical
patent law till recently. So in India for almost all medicines we do
not have "brand premium" and generally the innovator brand and the
most popular generic is available at the same price.
So if the government cap the margins of wholesaler and retailers for medicines that are off patented, there would be many medicines
manufactured by different brand names that should be available at a much
lower rate. One example sited was for cetrizine, other medicines
mentioned in the newspaper were omeprazole, nimesulide. This would be
applicable to all the medicines that are off patent.
