Unified DIC (4)
********

August 2, 2006

Dear Dr Gupta and group members,

Since April '04, I have been working as Medicine Information Pharmacist at
MIC at NIPER. In the last two years of time, I have been working towards
day to day operations of centre and also on the training of personnel
interested in this area.

On the issue of unifying the DICs, I have to share with you that way back in
2004 we have realized and put across the need for networking of the MICs in
country (Full Report at
http://www.expresspharmaonline.com/20050324/happenings09.shtml).

As per international register of DICs, 11 centres are operational within the
country and each one of them has to generate/manage resources for drug
references, handbooks, electronic databases, computing equipment, internet
connectivity and day to day costs. Some of these costs are recurring because
to remain current, you have to invest in these. Resource intensiveness is
probably one of the reasons why many DICs have not been able to sustain the
operations. I personally feel that networking of DICs/MICs in the country is
one solution to cut down on the resources.

In terms of advantages, cutting down (at least) the initial costs as
mentioned above will give the DICs/MICs enough room for managing finances
for the day to day operations and, of course, we all know that effective
networking in scientific community is always a win-win situation. The MIC at
NIPER operates from Department of Pharmacy Practice and I would be happy to
hear from my fellow colleagues in DICs/MICs who are willing to explore the
chances of forming a network.

Thanks,
Ms. Sukhpreet
