Dear Friends,

We are talking a lot about the greed amonst doctors as
reason for learning from MRs about drug prescriptions.
I do not think that in the beginning of their career
that is so much of an issue, that only creeps in much
later. In the beginnning the prescriptions are MR
based, because that is the only source of information
available to them about drug prescribing, specially
for those who are based in periphery and do not have
seniors to guide them.

In fact earlier had a system of housemanship for one
year (6 months each in 2 subjects). This was a good
system exposing the newly passed out doctors to the
nuances of clinical therapeutics besides orienting in
to the speciality. After that even if they did not get
a PG admission, they could practice with some
prescribing as well as clinical skills acquired during
house surgency. If they got admissions in PG there was
already an orientation to the subject, which also
benefitted them. Otherwise now a days a number of them
do join a subject, but realise after sometime that
they are a misfit and have all sorts of problems.
I still feel that either this system should be
restarted, or some basic therapeutics to be taught in
the medical colleges.
