India's Drug Policy
**********
Dear I-Drug Members,
At last our National Drug Policy will see the light of the day. It appears that the thrust of the policy is to control the prices of Essential Medicines. 72 medicines are already under price control and now the government intends to control the prices of 354 essential medicines as per the National Essential medicines List. It sounds very exciting but lot needs to be seen. It is feared that medicines having already very low prices and are included in the list may prove non-profitable venture for the pharma industry and may stop manufacturing these medicines. This may lead to reduced access to these Essential Medicines.
Let all of us remain vigilant for such a change.
Dr Usha Gupta
HOD Pharmacology,
MAMC, New Delhi & Executive Vice President DSPRUD, New Delhi.
