Orphan diseases/Designated drug court (2)
**********
Dear All,
This is regarding the issues raised by Dr. Mandal. This is probably for the first time, the government of India has come out with the draft Pharmaceutical policy which tries to make a balance between the interest of industries and bit of people of the country. All these days the policy was more on industry oriented and we have seen the growth of pharma industries in the country. They are very competitive in terms of facilities and turn over. The policy intends to have price control over all the drugs are EDL.
Looking back to the scenario of new drug development in this country either by pharma industries or by government funded research institutes is not rosy. In fact dismissal. The country is going to face the impact of product patent and whose real impact would be felt only after few years.
Many other funding bodies (non profit organizations) are working on development of new medicines worldwide for orphan diseases as they are not the in priority area of pharma companies.
With our limited resource: Will it be advisable to invest in risky drug development area?
or, to develop strategies so that the existing resources can be utilized optimally for the benefit of people suffering from these diseases(like improving accessibility and affordability). The existing medicines are known to be effective.
Of course, we need to be independent and self reliant. But priority is a must.
The learned colleagues of the group should discuss.
