I agree with most of what you say. But remember, gifts are not given to green horns. Only someone who has 'earned' enormous profits will get a Maruti Zen. So I would think that greed is not the only thing. Lack of Knowledge; and more specifically, the lack of the desire for knowledge - taking the easy way out - is the big malaise.
   
But what can we do about it. I can only see education as the way out.
