BUSPIRONE HYDROCHLORIDE
· Class
¨ Antianxiety
¨ Azaspirodecanedione
· Dosage, Adult (usual)
¨ Anxiety: 5 mg ORALLY 2-3 times a day OR 7.5 mg ORALLY twice a day; may increase the dosage by 5 mg/day every 2-3 days as needed (usual dose 20-30 mg/day (2-3 divided doses), MAX dose 60 mg/day)
¨ Depression: 5 mg ORALLY 3 times a day; may increase the dosage by 5-10 mg/day every 2-3 days as needed (usual dose 40-55 mg/day (3 divided doses), MAX dose 90 mg/day)
· Dosage, Pediatric, (usual)
¨ safety and efficacy in children under the age of 18 has not been established
· Dose Adjustments:
¨ liver disease: clearance is decreased, use lower initial doses and increase gradually as needed and tolerated
¨ renal impairment: clearance is decreased, use lower initial doses and increase gradually as needed and tolerated
· Administration
¨ ORAL: should be taken consistently, either always with food or always without food
· Monitoring
¨ reduction in symptoms of anxiety
¨ signs and symptoms of withdrawal upon abrupt dose reduction or discontinuation

¨ Oral Tablet: 5 MG, 7.5 MG, 10 MG, 15 MG, 30 MG

· Contraindications
¨ hypersensitivity to buspirone products
· Precautions
¨ avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice
¨ buspirone will not block withdrawal symptoms in sedative/hypnotic/anxiolytic drug-dependent patients
¨ concomitant use of an monoamine oxidase inhibitor
¨ severe renal or hepatic impairment
· Adverse Effects
¨ COMMON
§ Gastrointestinal: Nausea (3%)
§ Neurologic: Asthenia (2%), Confusion (2%), Dizziness (9%), Excitement (2%), Headache (3%), Numbness (2%)
§ Ophthalmic: Blurred vision (2%)
§ Psychiatric: Feeling angry (2%), Hostile behavior (2%), Nervousness (4%)
¨ SERIOUS
§ Cardiovascular: Congestive heart failure (rare), Myocardial infarction (rare)
§ Neurologic: Cerebrovascular accident (rare)
