Revived India-Drug (7)
***********

Responding to concluding remark of the note by Prof. Roy Chaudhury, I would like to share that that dispairity in prices of equally effective essential medicines in the country is partially because of legal permission of marketting and drug promotion of the branded generics of the "off-patent" generic medicines. There is no novelty or IPR associated with marketting and promotion of off-patent medicines and such medicines should be allowed only in generic names to prevent over prescribing of unnecessary medicines. This would allow the end user to decide what kind of company product he wants, instead of current scenario in which the decision is taken by the prescribing doctors/ dispensing chemists (who are quite often paid for patronising the particular product).

Yours sincerely,

Dr Nirmal Gurbani
