Ofloxacin in children(3)

Dear Mr. Ahuja,
This is in response to your enquiry regarding the use of ofloxacin in children. It would be useful to know the age of the intended patient to be able to make a meaningful comment on the use of ofloxacin in children.
The available data, based on animal studies, has shown degenerative changes in weight bearing joints of young animals. But again, as in many other cases, the human data is not in concordance with animal data. Several reports on human offspring report that none of the quinolones have a negative effect on linear growth of children. This implies that the changes noted in animlas are certainly not noted in human children.
Therefore, the quinolones may be used if the first line antibiotics have failed and the child and/or infant is in a life threatening situation. This is based upon the review of at least four standard references we commonly use at the Medicine Information Centre.
We are also sure that the information posted as the first reply by Dr Patwardhan has ample information.
I hope you find this useful and please donot hesitate to write back to us if you have any more queries.
Thanks,
Ms. Sukhpreet
