Dear Munish,

At present, in India, the generic market is a mess.
Since bioavailability & bioequivalence studies are not mandatory in our
country, we have no grading etc..., and no way of knowing if a drug will
work or not!
Generics with brand names are called branded generics, and in fact
have the same status as that of generics, i.e. they are not promoted as are
branded drugs, to doctors with medical reps, etc.
Pricing changes in generics are expected shortly, with the
Ministry taking active interest in this. This is likely to bring down the
prices of generics, thus giving a clearer distinguishing from branded drugs.
